Dueling people with that thing was crazy. Who knows where today's trend of giant team-based shooters, like Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, the Battlefield series, etc would be without Tribes?Īnd the spinfusor/disker/disk launcher.

Jetpacks? Vehicles? Giant outdoor maps with seamless transitions to complex indoor environments? Deployable, repairable, controllable, multifunctional buildings? 128 players in a server? "Capture the objective" gameplay? Server-side mods that can radically change gameplay? Freakin' teamplay on a giant scale? That commander window you could use to manage the battlefield and give orders to people? Tribes did some stuff that no games has surpassed, really, and it definitely set the stage for the Battlefield XX42 games. It was really funny at 3AM.Īnd boy, Tribes was way ahead of its time.

Then out of the blue some guy goes "our generator needs repairs!" in that wonderful cheesy voice, and a second later "no shit sherlock" shows up in the chat window. (Really, you could spend all your time keeping enemies out, but who cares if you have to repair an inventory station every once in a while as long as you cap the flag?) So like, for most of the game, all our stations are down, as are our generators.

Our base had been thoroughly ransacked as so often happens. I remember once I had insomnia so I was playing at like 3AM, just me, a quiet city/world, the computer, and Tribes. That and the general lack of support and advertisement from Sierra meant it really wasn't going anywhere. As for Vengeance, I think it was a step closer to the original's gameplay, but marred by the reduction of a lot of stuff, mapsize included.

While it looked nicer, it just didn't feel as tight or responsive as T1, and to this day I still haven't figured out how to manage heat. 2 just tweaked the physics and atmosphere of the game too much. Speaking of the other games, I was never a fan of Tribes 2, but I did like Vengeance. I'm sad about the loss of the master server, but I imagine one of the larger Tribes fansites will set a new one up in no time.

I still have the Tribes 1.0-1.11 patch on my hard drive for whenever I get the urge to reinstall it. It's just such an awesome, simple, rollercoaster of a game that it quite simply never gets old.

One time during school I was out sick for a couple days with the flu, and I actually managed to "extend" that to the end of the week in order to get more Tribes time in. Tribes consumed my life for several solid months when it was relatively new, 33.6 modem, 250 ping and all. Tribes still is one of the best online games of all time. However, the master server was still active after this date. On July 16, 2007, Sierra Entertainment announced that they would cease online support of Tribes starting on August 16th, 2007. The outdoor environments were and still are relatively huge, extending for several kilometers in any direction, but "jetting" and "skiing" gave Tribes a fast-paced feel. In general, bases were scattered throughout the map depending on the gametype. Most of the standard maps were outdoors in a variety of climates, from sunshine to snow and hail. Tribes was one of the first online-only games of its kind and sported several multiplayer features that other games have only recently included (32+ player support, 128 players max, troop transport vehicles, several different player classes). It was developed by Dynamix and published by the company now known as Sierra Entertainment in 1998. It is the first of the Tribes video game series and follows the story from Earthsiege and Starsiege. Starsiege: Tribes (usually called Tribes or Tribes 1) is a sci-fi first-person shooter (FPS) computer game.
